Featuring the Print Arts Northwest Founders' Portfolio

An exciting new exhibit, " The Art of Contemporary Printmaking," will open on Dec. 10 in the Museum's Collins Gallery with a special Member preview on Nov. 17. The exhibit, in partnership with Print Arts Northwest will feature the Founders' Portfolio, and include a holiday art sale. The Founder's Portfolio is a collection of seventeen original hand pulled prints by the Founding Members and included Charter Members of the Northwest Print Council.

The exhibit highlights a range of media and printmaking techniques and documents the works of significant premier printmakers of the region including Dr. Gordon Gilkey. Dr. Gilkey was also the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oregon State University, taught printmaking at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and established the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for the Graphic Arts at the Portland Art Museum. Dr. Gilkey's influence in the world of art and printmaking cannot be overstated.

The exhibit marks the beginning of a new creative partnership for the Washington County Museum as the Museum seeks to embrace both local artists and exhibit the broader culture of Washington County. Print Arts Northwest's mission, like the Washington County Museum, is to educate the public through educational programs and workshops and reflects a very natural partnership for both organizations.

An announcement from Jim Carmin at the Wilson Room / Collins Gallery on the third floor of the Central Library downtown:

Pierre Lecuire: livres de počte
May 2 -- June 12, 2008

Born in southern France in 1922, Pierre Lecuire is a poet who has devoted his lifetime to making books for his poems. Never content with commercial publishing, Lecuire's books are linked to the European idea of livres d'artistes by including the work of printmakers and other artists. But he goes beyond that tradition by having a more direct connection with his artists. Lecuire has described his ambition simply as: "I want to write the poem and build a house for it."

Do you love the harpsichord like I do? This event is happening in the Collins Gallery at the central branch of the Multnomah County Library.

From the Multnomah County Library website:
"Bonnie Garrett will be performing harpsichord music of 17th and 18th century Europe. She will play compositions by Louis Couperin, William Byrd, Padre Antonio Soler and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Garrett has been active as performer and teacher of harpsichord and piano throughout the western United States. A co-founder of Portland Pro Musica, known for its popular Saturday Baroque series in the 1980s, she has also produced the series Papa Haydn and Friends and Vienna circa 1830, portions of which were aired on Oregon Public Broadcasting. Selected by The Oregonian as an "Art Star of the Nineties," Garrett directs the private music instruction program at Reed College, where she also teaches piano and harpsichord and directs concert series including Friday at Four, Music in the Gallery, and Bach in High Places. In demand as adjudicator and presenter of workshops and master classes, she is presently engaged in a project focusing on performance considerations in the keyboard sonatas of Haydn."

It's a nice day to go to the library, isn't it? Yes, it is. Well, as long as we're going to the library, we might as well do it right, don't you agree? Of course.

So, put on your high-heeled sneakers, and meet us at Multnomah County's beautiful Central Library downtown. Remember when it was closed for renovation, and we were using the ground floor of that office building down on 4th? Jeez, was that really eleven years ago? Yes, it was, as this February 1997 New York Times article reminds us:
