The Red and Black Cafe is thriving one year after being forced out of our old location, and business is getting better every month! However, we reopened on a shoestring budget and we are still recovering from the costs associated with our move. We are also preparing for increased payroll expenses with Oregon minimum wage goes up in January!
Dear friends of the Red & Black Cafe,
We are pleased to announce that the Red & Black Cafe (a worker-owned, collectively-managed cafe and community space) is surviving and thriving 1 year after being forced out of our old location on SE Division.
We reopened at 400 SE 12th Avenue in January, and over the last 9 months we have sold untold amounts of coffee and black dragon noodles, acquired a beer & wine license and a brand new beer cooler (check out our selection of local microbrews!), and hosted lots of film screenings, music shows, and benefits for community organizations.
With each passing month, business has improved. We feel confidant that we will be able to provide empowering jobs, delicious vegan food, and a welcoming community space for years to come.
However, we are facing a few financial hurdles. We re-opened on a shoestring budget and we are still recovering from the costs of renovating and equipping our new space and renewing our licenses.
Also, Oregon minimum wage is going up by .45 per hour in January! On behalf of all low-wage workers in the state we celebrate the increase. Unfortunately, this w...

Glass Bead Collective, Twin Cities Indymedia, and other independent media activists have released a new film, 'Terrorizing Dissent', an expose of events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets, 'Terrorizing Dissent' focuses on the story of dissent suppressed. People charged with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism" speak out against the government's campaign to manipulate media coverage and label civil disobedience and community organizing as terrorism.
'Terrorizing Dissent' shows the results of the $50 million dollars the Department of Homeland Security gave to local authorities for security & a large chunk of which went to weaponize the police & and the $10 million insurance policy contract between the RNC Host Committee and the City of St. Paul, which shattered Minnesota's civil compact between protesters and police.
Portland Anti-imperialists are proud to show Terrorizing Dissent at the Red and Black Cafe (400 SE 12th Ave) on November 11 at 7pm. After the video, stay for Q&A from those who were there

How do radical movements respond to personal crises, trauma, care as well as
issues that flow through our everyday lives? Beyond seeing politics as a
simply a set of issues and positions, how do we begin to construct new
relationships, activities and projects that address issues such as mental
health, care, trauma and grief, sexual assault, and interpersonal violence?
This discussion seeks to address some of these questions in two ways: in the specific sense of developing harm intervention systems, creating communities of care, addressing sexual assault and organizing around issues of mental health; and in the general sense of creating movements that don't see such projects as appendages but rather as a core element in reconstructing our lives, creating movements that self-reproduce themselves, and to forge projects that challenge the social reproduction of capital and the state-apparatus by constructing new forms of life and new social relations.
Panelists:
- Kevin Van Meter: Team Colors Collective & In the Middle of a Whirlwind Journal; speaking on creating communities of care and self-reproduction
. - Kristi: Counterbalance Zine (Seattle); speaking about trauma and burnout in the activist community.
- Kristyn Leach: from "I Want To Do This All Day: Redefining Learning and Reinventing Education " audio documentary and Stonewall Youth (Olympia); speaking about community organizing, leadership development and developing political relationships and institutions.

Burned out from the Zine Symposium? Understandable. That's why you should come to this after party and kick back with a delicious meal and a cool glass of something. There will be a bunch of music too, including local favorites The Taxpayers!
