Starting December 7, Aaron "Geek in the City" Duran and  a cast of thousands will be writing and performing live radio dramas each Sunday night on KCMD AM970 (radio home of your Portland Pilots!).  The first two plays sound spectacular: The first play, A.Z. (After Zombies), takes place in modern-day Portland, Oregon, with one crucial difference: [...]

On May 11, 2001 a very talented writer and activist was taken from this world far before his time. Not yet 50 years of age, Douglas Adams passed on and left a legacy for all that would come after him. It it with honor and humor that Geek in the City and the Rename42nd.org Group ask [...]

Sitting at Pals Shanty Saturday night, I saw the ad for the new DeNiro/Pacino flick Righteous Kill.  Young Vito Corleone and Michael Corleone in a movie together?  Sign me up! I texted Aaron Duran, proprietor of Geek in the City and co-proprietor of Film Fever Radio, to see what he'd heard.  He said he hadn't heard [...]
May 5, 2008WWIRE from Willamette Week
One week into WW's 2008 Best of Portland survey, we're pushing 600 ballots, and the campaign for Takayuki Suzuki appears to be a smashing success. Timbers fans, fully one-sixth of the ballots we've received name Suzuki as Portland's best athlete. But don't rest now. The poll is still open for another 26 days?more than enough time for another franchise to launch a counteroffensive. And what about you, Blazer's Edge? Brandon Roy is only trailing Suzuki by a slim margin. You could still turn this around. As for Blazers management?are you guys even trying? Greg Oden's only got 8 votes to his name! On the Best Activist front, Steve Novick and Jefferson Smith?both of whom are, as you might have noticed, running for public office?are currently in the lead. But who's that sneaking up behind? None other than Zetaman! All right, big Z! Among bloggers, Geek in the City is trashing previous winners bojack.org and portlandfoodanddrink.com. B!X is nowhere to be seen, to say nothing of Urban Honking. Come on, guys! Among radio hosts, Rick Emerson is destroying the competition. That means the rest of you broadcast professionals have some catching up to do. Cort and Fatboy, I mean you. And you, Daria. Vote now!
May 12, 2008WWIRE from Willamette Week
Attention Timbers Army: you've got competition. As WW's 2008 Best of Portland Readers' Poll passes the 1000 vote mark this morning, Brandon Roy has a one-vote advantage over Timbers fave Takayuki Suzuki in the race for "Best Local Athlete." Oh, the drama! Don't worry, Timbers fans, you still have 19 days to get all of your drinking buddies to take the survey and swing the vote back to your team. In the meantime, we here at the office are still waiting for the Rose City Rollers to field a contender. Who'll it be, ladies? Cadillac? Rollareina? We eagerly await your votes. As far as we can tell, no one is yet actively trying to win the "Best Weirdo" category. Elvis has a slight lead over Clyde Lewis and Tres Shannon. I know there's got to be someone out there who deserves to win in a landslide. IKEA is, so far, clearly your favorite place to buy furniture. But they ain't local, folks. Do you really want to give the people's endorsement to a bunch of furriners? Think it over. Finally, Geek in the City continues to trounce its competition among local blogs, while Cort and Fatboy are gaining on Rick Emerson as the best radio hosts who aren't batshit crazy. Fight! Fight! Fight!
May 2, 2008WWIRE from Willamette Week
Two days in, WW's 2008 Best of Portland Poll just passed 300 votes. It's far too early to pick favorites, but some interesting trends are developing: First, the district with the most votes so far is The People's Republic, with The Arboretum and Neglected Southwest tied for second. The district that fields the most ballots will get a special prize (we'll announce exactly what that will entail soon), so get your neighbors voting! Second, there's a tie for Best Blog between Jack Bog's Blog and Geek in the City. Finally, the frontrunner for Best Local Athlete is a dead heat between Brandon Roy and The Timbers' Takayuki Suzuki. Suzuki's currently in the lead by about five points. Blazer bloggers? Timbers fans? You have your work cut out for you. Take WW's Best of Portland poll or watch the results come in live here.

First, Aaron would like to apologize for the random "banging" in the background. The Geek in the City Studios are in a cool but very old building. One with an old heating system. A heating system his landlord decided to repair right in the middle of recording. No amount of editing was gonna' fix it. [...]

I know I talk a lot about the The HERO Initiative, so much so that some of you might have already stopped reading this post. Well, you do so at your own peril good sirs and madams. Unless the idea of an original sketch by living legends does not appeal to you, then, stop reading.

However, I know real comic fans and lovers of popular culture will want to learn more!

And what is this more that I write about? Well, only your chance to help your favorite comic writers and artists...Oh, and get invited to VIP parties at either the Los Angles or Chicago Wizard World...

Things you need to know about my Top 10 list before we get underway:

1) It's f**ked.
2) I didn't see everything released this year, because I'm not insane. I like
interacting with people, getting drunk, reading comics, things like that. I can't do
those things if I'm in a theater every waking minute of my life.

Movies I probably should have seen before making this list:

In Bruges. Doubt. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Milk. Forgetting Sarah
Marshall. Rachel Getting Married. Superhero Movie. Speed Racer. One of those last two is a joke.

Movies I saw that didn't make this list:

Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Tropic Thunder. Iron Man. The Spirit. A 5-second version of Batman and Robin that consisted solely of a man pooping in close-up.

Honorable Mentions: Hellboy II, which was better than Iron Man, which was one of the best superhero movies I'd ever seen until they both got dwarfed by The Dark Knight. Choke, a quiet, low-key, almost hopeful transformation of Palahniuk's grimiest novel. Cloverfield, which worked in spite of it's s**ty characters and shaky-cam artifice.

The List...

As I write this, a stack of just read comics sits on my living room table; no bags, no boards, not even stacked properly to prevent ?book bend?. The room still smells like Christmas, with a hint of clove and orange from the baking in the kitchen. $48.50. That was the total from this last trip to my local comic book shop. Granted, this is two-week worth of books and I tossed in a trade I?ve wanted to pick up. Still, averaging $10.00 a week takes its toll on one vastly underemployed freelance writer like your friendly neighborhood Geek. Sure, I get my fair share of free PDF books from smaller companies for review, but the big boys still don?t bother with a ?small website with narrow online appeal?, so if I want to know what Grant Morrison is doing to my beloved Dark Knight, I need to shell out the cash. Then there are all the books collected in trades or the one-shot graphic novels that I simply cannot live without owning. It is easy enough to justify. I review books for the KUFO...

The ?better late than never? edition! Sorry for the delay folks. With families in town and an old PC hard drive that didn?t want to give up the goods; this was almost the repost that wasn?t! However, thanks to listener Anno Superstar, everyone can enjoy the best Christmas commentary ever? 3 days after Christmas. Look at it this way, everyone has gone home now and you can enjoy this commentary in peace!
