Oregon Ballet Theatre

Oregon's premiere professional ballet company is on the rise, gaining national recognition and worldwide attention. Artistic Director Christopher Stowell's programming has introduced Portland to some of the world's greatest choreographers, and his dedication to developing the art form is evident in his most recently acclaimed work, Swan Lake.

They like us?they actually like us! Every September, New York temporarily suspends its disbelief that culture exists elsewhere and invites more than two dozen guest artists to perform at City Center's Fall for Dance Festival. And this year, for the first time, Oregon Ballet Theatre will be represented. Principal dancers Alison Roper and Artur Sultanov will perform the central pas de deux from Christopher Wheeldon's Rush, the ballet that OBT brought to its Kennedy Center debut this summer (and unveiled this spring in Portland at White Bird's 4 x 4: The Ballet Project.) This is a first-time invitation for OBT, who'll be keeping company with big names including American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and the companies of Merce Cunningham and Paul Taylor. Fall For Dance runs Sept. 17-27, OBT opens its 2008-2009 season two weeks later in Portland (Sept. 20-21), which should allow just enough time for the head-swelling to subside. On the heels (or pointe shoes) of the acclaimed Northwest Professional Dance Project, another Portlander?well, former Portlander?Trey McIntyre, is getting some lovin' from the "Gray Lady," (the only paper that still matters when it comes to dance writing). Dubbed an "excellent craftsman" by NYT dance reviewer Roslyn Sulcas here, McIntyre officially debuted his dance company, the Trey McIntyre Project, at Jacob's Pillow. He was (sort of) dinged for not having a "voice," even though the reviewer says that actually might be part of his appeal. During his days as a freelancer, McIntyre?who has created over 75 ballets for over 30 companies?has been the resident choreographer at Memphis Ballet, Washington Ballet, as well as our own Oregon Ballet Theatre. (Psst?McIntyre was also once one of People Magazine's "25 Most Eligible Bachelors" in 2003) Now based in Boise, Idaho, it looks like this lanky choreographer is moving in the right direction. The company will perform as part of White Bird Dance's next season. For more information go here. Below is a short clip from the company Trey now keeps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcCS-Scy9Co
