4:30 pm Sunday, Sept. 7 at South Waterfront Discovery Center:
Sojourn Theatre pulled off a pair tricky balancing acts this weekend in Built, a co-commission of PICA and the South Waterfront artist-in-residence program staged at the soon-to-be defunct South Waterfront Discovery Center. The first, pictured at left, was literal: a pair of actors dance on a tightrope over a sprawling model of the prefabbed neighborhood while discussing their search for a livable home, a stunt that wasn't as blunt a metaphor as you might imagine.
The second, artistic balancing act, was the more impressive of the two. Tasked with creating a show to foster conversation about urban planning, Michael Rohd and the gang combined the company's usual melange of dance, interview-inspired vignettes and abuse of the scenery with some serious audience participation. Later, after some cookies and a chance to explore a trio of million-dollar Potemkin kitchens, we transferred our choices to a larger board with several other audience members. Inevitably, the things we wanted farthest from our own homes ended up next to someone else's, and we were required to compromise to make a livable city for all. Finally, after some dance, some talk and some fun video work on an unthinkably expensive scale model of Atwater Place, we were moved to a room with an even larger group with an even lar...

Man, I use this photo a lot.
Sojourn Theatre is hosting a panel discussion titled "Healthcare, Culture and Belief: Do you have to believe in a cure to be healed?" with a doctor from Kaiser, a naturopath and a Somalian traditional healer tonight in the Studio Theater at the Armory (128 NW 11th Ave.). Admission is free. The event is inspired by Sojourn's upcoming project Throwing Bones, which examines healing from American and South African perspectives. It opens Friday, March 28.
