Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond started as a solo recording project of Ritchie Young in 2003. With help of engineer/ producer Rob Oberdorfer, Ritchie crafted the first Loch Lomond album, When We Were Mountains (In Music We Trust Records). Over the next few years, Loch Lomond performed the West Coast via their home in Portland, Oregon in various incarnations. Live performances would range from Ritchie by himself to an eight-person band. During this time, many different recording sessions took place in various studios and homes. These recordings were eventually compiled on an EP called Lament for Children (Hush Records) the summer of 2006. In the later half of 2006, Loch Lomond solidified into a full band, and the group is now busy rehearsing, writing and recording the second full-length Loch Lomond album; expected fall 2007 *Hush Records). The group will be on the road between recording times, some shows utilizing the full line-up, and ...

Riffing off of Bob Ham's recent piece looking ahead to some of what's to come in 2009, I can't resist highlighting some of the upcoming releases that find me waiting with bated breath (whatever that is). To be more accurate, some of the albums don't even have release dates yet-- some aren't even releases-- but these will be what are getting me out of bed and through this Portland winter over the next two or three months...

Dec 8, 2008The Life and Times of Michael5000
We took Niece #1 out to see the Decemberists on Thanksgiving Saturday. It was her first rock show. When I stop to think about what it would have been like to be taken to a rock show by MY aunts or uncles when I was 19, I marvel at what a patient and accommodating young woman Niece #1 is. She seemed to have a good time, in any event, cheering, buying a souvenir, and holding her cell phone toward the stage to taunt and/or share the experience with Niece #2, who was home in Alaska and allegedly jealous. [for background on the Nieces, the 5000s, and the Decemberists, see "A Decemberists Tale," August 2007]

Mrs.5000 and I have now seen the Decemberists four times, plus two of Colin Meloy's solo shows, and I can say with confidence that we've never seen them look so... um... tired. Well, they were at the end of a national tour and probably recovering from a lethargic turkey binge with their families just like the rest of us. They are solid enough professionals to produce high quality rock music even under these circumstances, however, and a supportive hometown crowd kept things lively.

The pleasant surprise of the night was the opening band, an act from here in the City of Roses called Loch Lomand...

Just in time for a month-long trek across the country in support of the Decemberists, Loch Lomond have decided to premiere the lead single from its forthcoming album the best way they knew how: via a grainy, sepia-toned video. The first directing spot for Alicia J. Rose (Doug Fir booker and photographer du jour for [...]
