Good Stuff NW

A blog. I'm passionate about design and marketing and I love living in Oregon with its combination of urban style and down-home friendliness.

I'm not sure whether to thank or curse Kab over at Good Stuff NW for introducing me to The Best of Craigslist in her last blog post. It is such a hoot reading the posts, but be careful, it is easy to waste waaaaay too much time here. I decided to focus the list [...]

I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone asked me to write my memoir... This meme's been circulating through the Medieval Literature arm of the blogosphere, and came to me by way of a friend from way back name of Dr. Virago over at Quod She. So without any further ado, my six word memoir:

"Something seemed askew about it all..."

And now for the best part... REVENGE! The following bloggists are hereby ordered to sum up their complex personalities and meandering life experiences in six words:

Patrick and Holly at Henwaller
Jesse at Corduroy Orange
Nina at Sweet Napa
Shuna at Eggbeater

From Good Stuff NW:
And now, heaven help us, our beloved Laurelwood Pub and Brewery in Hollywood is closing after today. But this change has an up side. It's set to reopen in a couple of weeks as Laurelwood Pizza Company and will be featuring antibiotic- and hormone-free meats and organic tomatoes in their pies, as well as their usual fantastic beers.

And this weekend, just up Sandy at 51st, they're opening the latest and greatest in what is becoming a burgeoning brewpub empire. I haven't visited this location yet, but it's apparently going to more than double their seating capacity and feature not just one but two play areas for kids.

In case you haven't kept abreast of the changes in the Laurelwood brewniverse (yeah I did!), here's what I've gleaned from spying on other people's blogs:

According to the Portland Beer Blog, the Laurelwood Pizza Co. opened last Saturday, in the space that the Laurelwood Pub & Brewery used to occupy, at 1728 NE 40th. Anybody know what style pizza they're serving? The Pub & Brewery, meanwhile, moved up to new digs at 51st & Sandy a couple weeks ago. Good Stuff NW informs us that "owner Mike deKalb says the new place [at 51st & Sandy] has more separation between the bar and the kid-friendly areas, so we can hope for a bit of peace and quiet while we sip."

Today's FoodDay section of the Oregonian is dedicated to the "100 Things We (Absolutely) Love," highlights from 2008 chosen from the submissions of staff and contributors. They picked 18 (!) of my faves and, listed by category, they were:

The latest from the gals at Preserve is a season-long series of classes titled "Householding: From Seed to Pantry." Held once a month, the series is "intended to offer concrete tools for creating new patterns of food production, direct-farm purchase, preservation and meal planning."

Instructors include Glen Andreson, Metro's natural gardening educator and host of "The Dirt Bag" on KBOO as well as "The Ground View" gardening columnist; Mary Rosenblum, a master cheese maker (she does classes at Kookoolan Farms, among others) and well-regarded science fiction author; and the inimitable Harriet Fasenfest, food activist, writer, blogger and your host at Preserve. As Bette Davis growled in All About Eve...

Some families stay in hotels when they go on vacation. Some rent houses. I grew up in a family that camped. Our first tent was an old canvas single-pole structure that had a wonderful musty, woodsy smell. The five of us would crowd in at night, the three of us kids wrapped in our sleeping bags, dreaming about the pancakes my mother would make in the morning over the fire on a big cast iron griddle.

Often that trip would be to the beach to spend a few days at Cape Lookout State Park...

I'm not a big "theme dinner" person, but it seemed like the last meal of 2008 should be something simple and hearty but also memorable. My brother and the lovely Ms. W- were coming over for a belated Christmas celebration, since they'd spent the holiday in Houston with her family, so whatever I came up with needed to serve five. Spaghetti with tomato sauce or a big pot of soup would fit the bill, but I went to the store with nothing in particular in mind.

Wherever we go, whether it's the beach, the mountains or even walking around the neighborhood, we always seem to come back with a few rocks or shells or bits of wood rattling in our pockets. Growing up, trips to the coast would always involve significant amounts of time trolling the tide line (and invariably getting soaked by the surf) for treasures to bring home.

And I'm not talking about a casual activity, but something that's deeply ingrained in the family DNA. It's instructive to note that my mother, before she passed away last year, insisted that her ashes and those of my father be mixed with her favorite collection of agates (we're talking, like, hundreds here) and tossed into the ocean off the coast where they'd been collected so that her great-great grandchildren might find those same stones washed up on the beach.
