The United Way of the Columbia-Willamette announced a record-breaking result from its 2007 campaign tonight.
The chapter raised $19.25 million in the campaign a 10.6 percent increase from $17.4 million last year, said Carolee Lee, its vice president of marketing.
The year-over-year increase is the largest in the chapter's 80-plus-year history, Lee said, and the percentage increase is its largest in 27 years.
About 600 business and civic leaders gathered at Portland Art Museum for the "Celebration of Caring" event, which recognized campaign contributions from companies and volunteers.
More than 1,100 companies and organizations participated in the 2007 campaign, which the agency said reached more than 280,000 employees in the four-county Portland/Vancouver area.
Three companies received the Campaign Chair's Award for Excellence: Intel Oregon, Daimler Trucks North America and Far West Fibers.
"Our donors know that investing with United Way is not only a good choice, but a smart one," said Alan Johnson, the campaign cabinet chairman and regional president of Wells Fargo Bank.
United Way funds more than 70 programs in the Portland/Vancouver area.

Here is my plea to the world: RECYCLE! As you can see, instead of throwing all this away, I'm hauling this to Far West Fibers in Portland, where they accept EVERYTHING except styrofoam. Granted, this is a couple weeks worth, but instead of dumping this into a landfill, this will be recycled into other products. Included are all plastics, cardboard boxes, frozen meal trays, milk containers, newspaper, junk mail, glass - etc. Our curbside recycler doesn't take a lot of stuff - tubs, yogurt containers, etc - like a lot of other cities. I encourage everyone to find a local recycling center and become educated on what you can and cannot recycle in your area. Ok... I'll step off my soapbox now.
