TriMet provides public transportation in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area, including most of Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties. It's easy to get around on TriMet, using our network of buses, MAX Light Rail, Portland Streetcar and LIFT Paratransit Service. MAX and many of TriMet's most popular bus lines run every 15 minutes or better throughout the day. You can ride for free within TriMet's fare-free zone, which includes most of Portland City Center and the Lloyd District. Plus, all TriMet service is accessible to people with disabilities. I rode the Xtracycle to work this afternoon around 2:30 pm, to do some ordering work and then to co-teach an apprentice class. It was freezing cold when I left the house, and the roads were clear and mostly dry.
Around 7 or so, snowflakes began to fall outside. I wasn't worried; it had warmed up enough so it wouldn't stick, and rain was forecast overnight anyway. By the time we'd wrapped up the class and shooed the apprentices out the door, it was 8:30 -- and there was a full inch of wet snow on the ground. But because the ground beneath it had warmed up over the last few days, the snow nearest the pavement had begun to melt and turn into slush.
Not really wanting to wait for a bus and deal with poor connections on a Sunday night, I rode the X all the way home (Xtracycles technically aren't allowed on Trimet; they won't fit on the racks and they're not allowed on MAX trains either. It would've been my luck to get kicked off the MAX miles from home and on the side of a steep hill).
I rode slowly and carefully, perhaps too...

What's free on New Year's Eve?
Free TriMet Service
All TriMet service will be free on New Year's Eve after 8:00 pm. Buses, the Streetcar and the Red MAX line will run on regular schedules. Yellow and Blue MAX lines will have special late-night service. For schedules and details, check the TriMet website.
