IPRC Presents: The Text Ball
At The Leftbank Building, 240 N Broadway
Cocktails At 6:00 PM
Ball At 7:00 PM
The Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) is happy to present The Text Ball, Portland's unique celebration of all things text, where attendees are encouraged to come dressed with text as part of their evening attire. The Text Ball will come alive with music, dancing, temporary text tattoos and text-based foods. A jury of distinguished authors, booksellers, publishers, fashion designers and artists will award prizes for the most artistic and/or grammatically correct costumes. The theme for this year's ball is ?Figures of Speech.?
As a preface to the Text Ball, the IPRC will host a casual post-Wordstock cocktail hour from 6-7 p.m., including live music, snacks and a silent auction/art show. The Text Ball proper will commence at 7 p.m. and last until 11 p.m. Both the cocktail hour and Text Ball take place at the Leftbank Building, 240 North Broadway.
Tickets are $10 for IPRC members, $15 for non-members. $5 for Wordstock attendees. Students are $5. They can be purchased at the IPRC offices, the IPRC?s Wordstock booth, Reading Frenzy bookstore or at the door. Tickets are also available online at brownpapertickets.com
All proceeds from The Text Ball benefit the IPRC, a unique non-profit organization serving Portland's creative publishing community for more than a decade. For more information visit www.iprc.org or call 503.827.0249
When I blogged about the Leftbank building a couple weeks ago, the identities of future tenants were still shrouded in secrecy--but now the worthy folks at the Portland Radio Authority have announced that they'll be moving into the building come September:
After years in our cozy down town studio, the PRA is about to upgrade back to the east side. By September we'll be in our new space in the Left Bank (formerly Multicraft Plastics) building that we will be building custom to our needs.
I am so jealous right now. That building is purty. Hit the PRA's website to donate money, supplies, or your precious time to help with the move.
The last time I talked to the folks at PICA about TBA:08, they were still scouting out locations for the Works, TBA's late-night music/performance mixer.
Then yesterday this hit the inbox:
Leftbank goes live
Web site launched, TBA?s THE WORKS,
and Bike Oregon?s Oregon Manifest to be held at Leftbank
Wha? At where now?
Leftbank, a newly unveiled commercial space in North Portland in what some folks might remember as the old MultiCraft Plastics space (240 N Broadway). It's part of the Leftbank Project, which also encompasses two other buildings in that area, including an Ecotrust-operated events space called the Green Room. I spoke with Joanna Agee about the project and she gave me some details, which I'll post after the jump?and I'm visiting the space on Friday, so check back for photos.

Melody Owen, "Giraffe"
Over the past decade, philanthropist Leslie Durst has been privately commissioning a different local artist each year to create a unique edition of twelve objects. The Butterfly Effect will showcase the works publicly for the first time. The visual effect may be somewhat hodge podge, but it should be an interesting chance to see a somewhat rare example of the role of modern patronage. Artists include Christine Bourdette, Inge Bruggeman, Rachel Denny, Kristy Edmunds, Eleanor Erskine, Sally Finch, Kay French, Jörg Jakoby, Melody Owen, and Jenny Rideout.

At the request of some friends, we've put together a list of reasons why people might call this ‘green'... It's a funny thing to talk about nowadays, now that the concept has gained so much currency in the popular culture while the understanding has lagged far, far behind. But away [...]
As Oregon Beer Month is culminating in the wonderful Oregon Brewers Festival this weekend, it seems like an exceptionally appropriate time to introduce Upright Brewing Company to the Leftbank website and it's visitors. UBC is set to be crafting beer by year's end and will be a production facility open to the public for tastings [...]
one saturday morning a few months back multimedia artist seth nehil conducted a work session in the bomb shelter of the leftbank. It's an accoustically potent space — walls, floor and ceiling all concrete — and one that he had sought out after hearing about some time earlier. That morning he [...]
Save the date! On Friday, October 3rd Leftbank is throwing a party to celebrate the reemergence of this historic building into the community. Please join us for music from Portland's golden jazz age, festivities, activities for the kids and building tours. Come meet the new tenants and see how this unique project [...]
