Please be prepared to wash your face upon viewing this post, it's a greasy one.  I have my new apricot facial scrub ready.

I gloriously admit that when I go to Seattle, I have Chinese food on my brain.  Portland has Vegetarian House and Bay Leaf, but neither fulfill my basic greasy Chinese take out habit that developed growing up on Long Island and going to college in Boston. In fact, going to P.F. Chang's while out of town on business usually hits that more!  Shhh.

Portland has an immense amount of Thai restaurants (Veganshizzle and I share the same favorite - Pad Thai Kitchen), yes, but they don't meet my liking for great chow mein or crispy gluten - that's what Seattle is for.  I've had the most reliably hit-the-spot meals at Bamboo Garden, but the fondest in my memory was a single meal at Teapot Vegetarian House...

Citygirl Snickerdoodles

With my free time this past holiday weekend, I got a chance to jump back into recipe testing for Terry and Isa's Cookie Book.  It's due out next year!

These are Citygirl Snickerdoodles, a vegan take on the classic.  Don't let the sprinkles fool you, I'm still humbug.

If I had a day off, I might wish for a warm fall day so I could sit in this chair all day, reading and sipping tea. I don't have a great book right now, but the one I just read was: Out Stealing Horses. I might read it again, if I had time.

And if I had more than one day off, I might head for Portland and here is how I would spend my time {eating, that is}. First off, of course, I would go to Little Red Bike Cafe to say hello to my friends, Ali and Evan, and eat one of their best-ever egg sandwiches. My personal favorite is The Messenger. Liam likes the 11 AM and Ben likes the Zoo Bomb. We all like their ice cream. If Ben was with me, he'd want to stop at FlavorSpot ? the one on Lombard, in the Videorama parking lot, near our old house ? for the waffle with sausage and maple butter.

Living in New York and Boston before my move to Portland, I sometimes miss bigger cities.  On the West Coast, I've been to San Francisco and Seattle.
Of course I adore Portland but I do relish the feeling of walking through downtown Seattle, because downtown Portland is tiny and short.  I've been back from my most recent Seattle trip for a few days, and have settled back into my Portland routine just as I'm heading out to Monterey, CA this weekend.

For me, Seattle means vegan chinese food!  The offerings in Portland just don't compare to Grasshopper in Allston, MA or Buddha Bodai in NYC.  Seattle has come to rescue my guilty cravings with Teapot Vegetarian House, Bamboo Garden and most recently, Vegetarian Bistro - I'll check out vegan Thai and Vietnamese offerings next time!

But first off, there's the coffee.  I don't drink much, but I enjoy the flavor and have high standards.  While in town I first indulged in a double Americano at Lighthouse Coffee...
