Mayor Sam Adams was sworn in today at Parkrose High School. I wouldn't normally carry political content, but I am a strong supporter of Mayor Adams and believe that it is worth taking a moment to review his thoughts and ideas for the future of our fair city. We are a city that is very youthful and embracing of diversity. The Pioneers who came to the Oregon Territory were very independent thinkers. It's nice to see that some things haven't changed all that much.

MAYOR SAM ADAMS
BETTER TOGETHER: BECAUSE PORTLAND BELONGS TO ALL OF US
Swearing In Remarks
Parkrose High School Auditorium
Portland, Oregon
January 5, 2009
?
Thank you Portland! My name is Sam Adams. I am honored to be your
mayor.

Thank you for the introduction. And thank you Parkrose High School
Broncos for your hospitality!

What a glorious and quirky city we have. Where else can you buy a
donut designed to look like "dirt?" Or browse one of the world's
largest bookstores and then walk a couple of blocks to the world's
smallest park. There is a reason experts always seem to rank us so
high. As the nation's most livable city, the best city for seniors,
the best city for walkers -- a city known for its bikers and hikers;
food and flowers; beer and bridges.

The reason for all this is clear: That reason is you. Us. All of us.
Because we have created this think-different, keep-it-real,

One of the big questions around Portland Beavers/Timbers owner Merritt Paulson's proposal to bring Major League Soccer to Portland is what's going to be the source for the $85 million needed to renovate PGE Park and build a new AAA stadium for the Beavers? A seemingly innocuous late-Friday announcement from the Portland Development Commission (below) may [...]

The systematic dismantling of the city-owned Portland Development Commission took a major leap forward today. In perhaps the most consequential decision from his reorganization of the City that Works, Mayor-elect Sam Adams took away the Portland Development Commission's responsibilities for housing. And as a result, now gone are 42 of the agency's 209 employees (about 20 percent [...]

Sam the Tram is moving the deck chairs around quite a bit, according to this morning's O. The biggest news: The "Sustainable Development" and "Planning" bureaus are going to be merged. "Sustainable Susan" Anderson will run the new combined office; Gil Kelley at Planning "has been offered a severance package." Ouch! Sam the Tram will be the commissioner in charge of the merged bureau, along with the Portland Development Commission. The synergy here will allow one-stop service for the Homer Williams developer weasel types who want to fleece the city's taxpayers. Oh, and he'll keep Transportation, too -- a match made in heaven. Go by streetcar! Fireman Randy gets the fire bureau; Amanda gets the touchy-feely stuff, including dealing with the unions and neighborhoods; and Nick Fish gets parks as well as keeping housing. Of course, since the top brass at the parks bureau have an immunity idol, they'll be surviving.

The Portland Development Commission is thinking about extending the Interstate urban renewal area.  They asked the SJNA board if the board was interested in having St Johns included in a feasibility study (this is like asking someone if they would be available later for you to ask them to a dance).  The board voted yes.  This is not a commitment to anything, except to be Studied.
