William Temple House

William Temple House restores hope and renews strength in individuals and families in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere.

Since 1965, William Temple House has served Portland by providing help where it is needed on behalf of the disadvantaged and distressed in the community. William Temple House outgrew its Marshall Street facilities and moved into the Mackenzie House on Northwest Hoyt Street in 1971.

Abbott Hall, adjacent to Mackenzie House, was completed in 1981 to house the expanding counseling and social service programs. It is named in memory of Fr. Abbott, who served as executive director from 1965 until his death in 1990.

The Thrift Store, which helps support counseling and social services at William Temple House, is a few blocks away on Northwest Glisan Street.

Apologies for the lack of updates over the past week. It's been a busy one, with the holiday falling right in the middle of things. On top of work, Sarah and I have been moving into our new place up in North Portland. It's been quite a task getting our belongings moved across town. I'm having trouble sorting through all of my stuff.

We now have significantly more space to stretch out in. It's quite a relief to get out of studio apartments into a spacious two-bedroom flat. We've been combing Craigslist and the local thrift stores for furniture finds. There's a lot of space to fill, but we've settled on a design concept to guide us. Our motif is wood & chrome. Anything that doesn't vibe with this gets the boot. Just today I went to the William Temple House thrift store on NW Glisan and found three of these beautiful mid-century dining chairs for a total of $24. There are some amazing pieces out there for the price of a song.

A continuous source of inspiration is Apartment Therapy...

William Temple House takes electronics. No restrictions, AFAIK. Just sayin', you don't have to pay them to donate your electronic gadgets.

Donations go toward their charity programs: food, rent, clothing and counseling assistance.

Hi

There have been a few DAMNPORTLANDERS who have inquired about free/cheap medical and dental services.

I received a mass e-mail from Commissioner Sam Adams this morning, with information from this blog post on his site regarding a question of our times: "Paper or Plastic?". Grocery bags, cloth versus disposable diapers, how to put glass bottles in the yellow recycling bins, wasteful delivery of phone books - these are the policy questions that are the core sustainability issues for many Portlanders. They're not going to install a green roof on their home, or naturescape their yard. They'll get the bus if it's cheaper and/or more convenient, not on principle. Plastic or paper grocery bags? Check Sam's blog - 16 comments already, as I write.
