Here at SmartTrips Downtown we are always talking about how much money you can save by commuting by walking, carpooling, transit or bike. Well, what if you want to start biking but don't have the up-front money to buy a bike?
The folks at Unitus Community Credit Union have created a special loan program to address this need. BikePortland has a full story here.
Unitus Community Credit Union will open a mock branch in the foyer of David Douglas High School on June 6-7 as part of a school program teaching basic financial skills.
The credit union is concerned that budget cuts might be undermining financial education throughout the state, said Laurie Kresl, vice president of planning and business development with the credit union. This is especially troubling, she said, because recent high school graduates and college students often are inundated with credit card applications.
In cooperation with the school's Personal Finance and Career Exploration program, the mock branch will teach everything from how to open accounts, how to complete basic bank transactions and how to apply for loans, Kresl said.
Educators later worked with the credit union to align the program with the school's finance education lessons, Kresl said.
Unitus Community Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned institution serving more than 60,000 members in seven counties.
