After an acceptable sleeping-in period, besides watching bowl games, what else is there to do on New Year's Day?
I know I'm not the only one who doesn't give a rat's ass about American Football.

This is my Little Jenna wearing her new hat she picked up at REI when we went there to pick up YakTrax during the big snowstorm. Interestingly, and unwittingly, she bought the exact same hat that Ara bought at REI earlier. And yes, that's Powell's bookstore in the background with the not-so-silky-smooth bokeh-ish out-of-focus-ness behind her.
My family does the Xmas thing on Xmas eve, so I have traditionally spent part of Xmas day at Powell's (1005 W Burnside). The downtown Powell's is open 10am to 6pm today. It's the best place on Xmas to encounter Portland's non-Xian literati (read: cute Jewish girls - though of course I have [...]

Veeps
(Top Shelf) tells the sordid, head-scratching, perversely entertaining stories of these men we've chosen to ride shotgun in the biggest rig in democracy. As we prepare to usher in a new VP, join us for an alternately hilarious and horrifying (but always illuminating) look back at past ones.

In raw and beautiful prose, debut novelist Nami Mun delivers
Miles from Nowhere
(Riverhead), the story of a young woman who is at once tough and vulnerable, world-weary and naive, faced with insurmountable odds and yet fiercely determined to survive. In the process, Mun creates one of the most indelible characters in recent fiction. "[E]xplosive....[A] gritty and empathic coming-of-age tale," praises Booklist (starred review).
