Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge

The City of Portland is beginning work to design a new bike and pedestrian bridge over I-5 to connect the historic Lair Hill neighborhood with the emerging South Waterfront district. The bridge will span approximately 700 feet, and will have a landing on the west side near the intersection of SW Gibbs Street and SW Kelly Avenue and on the east side near the intersection of SW Gibbs Street and SW Moody Avenue. The bridge will be adjacent to the aerial tram and will include improvements to some pedestrian crossings in the area.

The design for the new bike and pedestrian bridge under the aerial tram, connecting the historic Lair Hill neighborhood with the emerging South Waterfront district, is almost finished. The bridge will be about 700 feet long, spanning I-5, landing on the west side near the intersection of SW Gibbs Street and SW Kelly Avenue and on the east side near the intersection of SW  Gibbs Street and SW Moody Avenue.

The project team is completing design of the extradosed bridge (a hybrid between a cable-stayed and box girder bridge) selected after input from open houses, public meetings, an online survey, and the Technical and Citizen Advisory Committees.  Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2009 and to be completed in late 2010. This project is being led by the City of Portland in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The project's design and construction costs are funded through a federal earmark administered by the Federal Highway Administration.

The project team has listened carefully to the public, incorporated community ideas into the design, and is now eager to share the outcome.
