Reading Frenzy

The Arctic Blast of 2008 threw my holiday plans off kilter, both business and pleasure, so here is a last minute invite to come down to the shop today from 11am-4pm and visit with yours truly, have some cookies and hot spiced cider, and enjoy a spontaneous 10-50% off sale!

The Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) is happy to present The Text Ball, Portland's unique celebration of all things text, where attendees are encouraged to come dressed with text as part of their evening attire. The Text Ball will come alive with music, dancing, temporary text tattoos and text-based foods. A jury of distinguished authors, booksellers, publishers, fashion designers and artists will award prizes for the most artistic and/or grammatically correct costumes. The theme for this year's ball is ?Figures of Speech.?
As a preface to the Text Ball, the IPRC will host a casual post-Wordstock cocktail hour from 6-7 p.m., including live music, snacks and a silent auction/art show. The Text Ball proper will commence at 7 p.m. and last until 11 p.m. Both the cocktail hour and Text Ball take place at the Leftbank Building, 240 North Broadway.
Tickets are $10 for IPRC members, $15 for non-members. $5 for Wordstock attendees. Students are $5. They can be purchased at the IPRC offices, the IPRC?s Wordstock booth, Reading Frenzy bookstore or at the door. Tickets are also available online at brownpapertickets.com

Dear Damn Portlanders,
Congratulations, you made it through the NWMF and TBA, but the fun isn't over! Join us this Wednesday, September 17th at the Wonder Ballroom for the Alien Boy Film Benefit featuring Tender Forever, Calvin Johnson and Ah Holly Fam'ly! We'll also be screening excerpts from the film, hearing from some of the filmmakers, and celebrating the release of the Alien Boy zine, edited by Erin Yanke and Icky Ciccone, printed by Eberhardt Press, and sponsored by Reading Frenzy and Yoga Shala.
Two years ago this Wednesday, Portland resident James Chasse -- who had not committed a crime -- was apprehended by Portland police, beaten and tased, and taken to jail. Although he had been cleared for transport by paramedics on the scene, the jail nurses refused to admit him due to the severity of his injuries. James needed to be taken to the closest emergency room, but instead the same officers who had beaten him chose to head to a psychiatric hospital. James died en route in the back of their squad car.

I'm trying to spread the word about a recent theft from Reading Frenzy of a rare and valuable book. You can read about it here. I know it's a long shot, but because it is such a covetable title I'm spreading the word on the off chance that it surfaces. Stealing from independent booksellers is a low crime -- right down there with bicycles, library books and candy from babies.
