Maestro Lajos Balogh will bring his Portland Festival Symphony players to the parks this month for a salute to Franz Joseph "Papa" Haydn, a prolific Viennese composer who wrote over 100 symphonies. Beethoven wrote nine. Just sayin'. Bid adieu to another summer with a little Cabernet under dusky skies.

Papa Haydn, located on Northwest Portland's bustling 23rd Avenue, is a destination due to its plethora of dessert and pastry choices. I stopped by a while ago to check out their bistro burger. Raspberry Gateau at Papa Haydn

Oregon’s Land Use Board of Appeals last week dismissed an appeal of a City Council decision that would have blocked the development of an 87-space parking structure near Northwest 23rd Avenue. The two-story Northwest Irving Garage, which would be located behind the Papa Haydn restaurant on Northwest 23rd in an area known for its historic homes and boutique shopping, had raised the ire of residents who said it would change the character of their neighborhood.

A few photos of "Triad", a modern (circa 1980) steel sculpture plunked down in the middle of Laurelhurst Park. I'm not sure it fits the site all that well, but taken on its own it's ok. It's about the right size, and doesn't overpower the landscape the way some do (*cough* rusting chunks *cough*). The Smithsonian art inventory page for it is here. Not a lot else about it on the 'tubes, although I ran across a photo + brief mention of it in a back issue of the Multnomah Bible College student newspaper.



I'm not totally sure of this, but it sounds like the sculptor later went on to be a co-owner of Portland's Papa Haydn restaurant.
