Here's something you rarely see at a White Bird dance event: Booing. For the kick-0ff of their 10th Anniversary season of bringing the world's best dance companies to Portland, White Bird brought back the very first company it ever presented Paul Taylor Dance Co. Last night was the New York-based companies fourth visit to Portland via White Bird. In general, it was a well-received program from one of the United States' most prolific and honored dance makers. That was until the third piece, "Banquet of Vultures." First performed in 2005, the Battlestar Galactica-looking piece takes a stab at the greed of corporate culture, the futility of war, and even points an admonishing finger at none other than President George Bush (who comes off like the evil General Zod in Superman II not to mix movie metaphors). It was brilliant and included a standout performance by Michael Trusnovec as a big and very bad, Bush-looking guy. Rather than receiving the thunderous applause it deserved, it got a nice round of tepid clapping, and, believe it or not, a few of us in the audience heard the faint echo of boos. Which begs the following question: Who knew in little ol' Portland there were any Bush lovers left.

The smell of money and a clear front-runner in an upcoming mayoral election bring out the blue ribbon panel folk for Sam Adam's Creative Capacity Committee.

If you've been asleep, Adams' convened several gatherings to make the case Portland's arts community, using a new set of data and arguments, could ? possibly ? make a case for support from industry and the general population.

Three committees, and a detailed web site has launched to explain the Creative Capacity strategy: (links here to PDF files) a steering committee made up mostly of business-people and various politicians, a strategy committee made up of art types and art administrators, and a coordinating committee made up of City Hall and RACC brass, with their facilitator / consultant.

So who have been selected for these committees? And perhaps more importantly, what are their affiliations? (Much of the information below is available on the Creative Capacity web site, but in a PDF form which is less searchable than a HTML web page.)
